Josina Filipe started her official musical education at 12 years old, studying classic flute, piano and at 16 years old, lyric voice. Although she was always an active jazz listener it was only at the age of 25 she started singing jazz. Her first degree in higher education was Biochemistry, and while she was working as biochemist in Paris, she started having jazz singing lessons and participated in a jazz choir, leaving lyric singing lessons, and a classic chamber choir behind.

 

On her return to Portugal, at the age of 27 she entered JB Jazz school, and at the age of 29 she entered Universidade de Évora's Jazz Music course, where she obtained her Vocal Jazz Music degree on 2014. She studied jazz voice with Paula Oliveira and Joana Espadinha, and improvisation with Mário Delgado, Claus Nymark and Johanes Krieger. Josina Filipe also attended several masterclasses with Pedro Madaleno, Nuno Ferreira, Sara Serpa, Rita Martins, Carlos Bica, Jim Black, Dave Holland, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Aaron Goldberg and Tigran Hamasyan. While at Universidade de Évora she performed with other students and teachers in duo or ensemble and she integrated Universidade de Évora's Jazz Big Band, under the direction of Claus Nymark.

 

Josina Filipe is currently attending the Online Course of vocal improvisation by Sanna van Vliet at Conservatorium van Amsterdam Online.

 

Currently she performs in duo or in quintet in several jazz projects, in a jazz choir directed by Tiago Marques and also as a singer-songwritter.

Adittionaly she is also a singing teatcher in several schools in Lisbon. In parallel of further developing her own performance skills, Josina Filipe is also interested in further understanding the teaching of the singing voice.

 

Josina Filipe is also currently composing, developing and producing music for the children theatre company Rituais del Arte in Portugal.
